Brief
Coral reefs are an important part of the worlds ecosystem yet it is under threats of extinction. What are some ways we could mitigate this situation?
Challenge
Unsustainable tourism is one of the key driving factors to the damages done at coral reefs, yet tourism is a vital revenue source for many parts of the world.
Solution
A monitoring buoy system that prevents coral reefs from damage caused by unsustainable tourism. Forming barriers that prevent tourists from entering sections of the reef allowing natural restoration.

Corals
What is a Coral?
Colonies of marine invertebrate coexist with algae. Forming calcium carbonate exoskeletons which in turn forms reefs. Home to over 50% of marine diversity, food supply and economy.
Consulting Experts
Blue Labs at Nausicca aid in the understanding of coral reefs and their challenges.
Educating ourselves

Unsustainable Tourism
Insights
- Unsustainable tourist supports economy for community but damages coral reefs in the process.

- Human reef restoration holds little impact to long term coral sustainability due to effort, diversity and time factors.

- Awareness and prevention is the driving factors for long term coral sustainability.
Goal
How can we sustain tourism while instilling prevention and education at coral reefs?
Design Phase
Sacrificial Ideas
Brainstorming on potential ideas and categorizing them in terms of its impact.
Sketching and Visualizing
Coming up with visualization of what the solution could be.
Presenting and getting feedback
Receiving useful feedback from professors and experts about our solutions

Final Outcome
Coral Alert
Coral Alert is a monitoring buoy system that collects data and protects coral reefs from damage caused by unsustainable tourism. It forms a barrier to prevent tourists from entering certain sections of the reef and allows for natural restoration.

- Prevents tourist from entering alerted location for natural restoration.

- Monitors reefs and educates tourist about current data.

- Camouflages and promotes natural habitat when in position.
User Scenario
Coral Guardian
New monitoring and maintenance job opportunities for community.
Pre Arrival
Pre-arrival reef knowledge before tourist arrival.
Monitoring
Live visual and informative data collection from system.
Closure
System sections off affected locations for natural restoration.
Education
Creating sustainable tourism through coral knowledge.
New monitoring and maintenance job opportunities for community.

Coral Guardians
Job opportunities, responsible for setting up and maintenance of system.
Technology
Capitol Tower PUDO lacks the clear indications of its roads and pathways while also providing little safety to pedestrians. Users also needed more spaces for sitting and also to be productive while waiting for their vehicles. There was also no clear way to identify their vehicles at the PUDO.

- Productivity
Alert Deployment
Abnormalities detection, deploys and inflates Coral Alert from dormant state.
Prevention
Sectioned off coral reef provides a isolated state for natural restoration.
Components
Ballast and Sensors
This would allow the buoy to monitor reefs and float or sink if needed.
Inflation and Deployment
Allows the buoy to anchor itself and create an alert.
Casing
Designed to fit into its natural surroundings.
Calcium Carbonate Anchor
The anchor will be a permanent feature of the reefs, providing new habitats for marine growth.
Technology
Aided by coral experts, engineers and users to create an impact and feasible device.
Application
Pre Arrival
Location specific pre arrival data, prepares tourist on health of reef.
Interacting
Live visual data allows interaction and discussion among tourist.
Monitoring
Data collecting and visualization allows education and awareness.
Awards - Dyson Award 2022
